Futures Market Exchanges And Futures Contracts
Contracts in the futures market are between a buyer and seller. The contract states that the seller must provide the buyer a very specific quantity of a certain item, such as cotton, oil etc, for a price agreed today, but at a date in the future. To make money trading futures you need to be a buyer of the contract if you think the value of the commodity is going to go up, and a seller of the contract if you think it will go down. The settlement takes place at a future date but you always have to buy and sell at todays prices.
Futures contracts are regulated by a number of large exchanges such as the the CBOT and the LIFFE. When you either buy or sell a contract most traders do not hold it until the settlement date, but usually will close the contract for a profit when the market moves in their favor. The origins of the futures markets can be traced back to farmers and merchants who wanted method managing the risks in their business against bad weather or failed crops. The use of futures contracts helps them to maintain a more constant price for their products when the demand can vary a lot.
The use of futures in the farming industry has many benefits such as allowing the farmer to be able to plan ahead as he already knows what kind of profit he can expect from his crop of say coffee beans. The price may not be the best and the merchant may make a killing but the risk is reduced. Normally the farmer and the merchant will form a contract early in the season long before harvest time for the price of the crop, this is in effect a futures contract. Both the farmer and the merchant are able to reduce their trading risks in this way. Futures markets have evolved to include markets whose underlying asset is a financial asset, such as a bond or a portfolio of stocks.

Trading is an activity which has great rewards but also requires a great deal of effort before becoming successful at it. In may ways it can be likened to many professional skill based sports like tennis or golf, there are no overnight success stories. More often it is the result of years of training and practice, learning the skills required until they become 2nd nature. Here are seven of the key skills that you must develop as a trader.
1. Always remember that Futures are no different to any other stock or option that you might trade, they will respond to the same laws of technical analysis including support and resistance, trendlines and price patterns. Become an expert in technical analysis, this is a lot easier than you think and is the easiest part of trading to master. The hardest part of becoming a good trader is learning how to master yourself.
2. This is a very basic point but is very important, always have your trading plan prepared before you enter a trade, never try and create it on the fly, you will be musch too emotional. make sure that you have both an entry and exit point in your plan.

It was the market melt down during 2000-2003 which has fuelled the huge growth in the trading seminar business. Many people now realize that making money trading is not so easy and requires a good education if you are going to survive all market conditions. This is a better option that just trusting what a fund manager may advise you who may be more concerned about his commission than your retirement. There are a lot of companies that advertize on late night TV but the ones that come to mind the most are Optionetics, Investools, Better Trades and Star Trader. I live in a city where these companies visit on a regular basis so I've attended all of their free warm up seminars.
I've also bought a number of seminars from these companies. The purpose of the infomercial is to get you excited about trading enough for you to take the trouble to attend their free warm up seminar at a local hotel. At the hotel expect to get a little more free trading infomation, and a lot more selling of the seminar. These sessions can last from 45 mins to a couple of hours and will try and get you to open the cheque book and sign up on the spot. From my experiance you will 1st be given an inflated price for the seminar which will then be cut dramatically if you sign up on the spot, so be prepared to be tempted by this.
